Registered Pharmacy Technician Training Program

To be approved as a Registered Pharmacy Technician Training Program in Florida, an entity must meet the following requirements pursuant to Rule 64B16-26.351, Florida Administrative Code:

For Non-Employer-Based Programs:

  1. Evidence of Licensure: The program must meet the requirements of and be licensed by the Commission for Independent Education pursuant to chapter 1005, F.S., or the equivalent licensing authority of another state or jurisdiction or is within the public-school system of the State of Florida.
  2. Curriculum, Catalog, or Course Descriptions: The course of study for the program must include classroom study and clinical instruction that incorporates the following:
    1. Introduction to pharmacy and health care systems:
      1. Confidentiality,
      2. Patient rights and Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA).
    2. Pharmacy law:
      1. Federal law;
      2. Florida State law;
      3. Florida State rules;
      4. Pharmacy technician Florida rules and law.
    3. Pharmaceutical – medical terminology, abbreviations, and symbols:
      1. Medication safety and error prevention;
      2. Prescriptions and medication orders.
    4. Records management and inventory control:
      1. Pharmaceutical supplies;
      2. Medication labeling;
      3. Medication packaging and storage;
      4. Controlled substances;
      5. Adjudication and billing.
    5. Interpersonal relations, communications, and ethics:
      1. Diversity of communications;
      2. Empathetic communications;
      3. Ethics governing pharmacy practice;
      4. Patient and caregiver communication.
    6. Pharmaceutical calculations.
  3. Faculty Credentials: The program must demonstrate that the faculty is qualified to teach the subject-matter by complying with the following:
    1. The program shall provide evidence of academic preparation or experience in the subject matter by submitting a job description, resume or curriculum vitae which describes the faculty member’s work experience and level of academic preparation.
    2. When the subject matter of an offering includes pharmacy technician practice, a licensed pharmacist or registered pharmacy technician with expertise in the content area must be involved in the planning and instruction.
    3. Pharmacy technician faculty supervising learning experiences in a clinical area in this State shall be licensed or registered.

For Employer-Based Programs:

    1. Curriculum, Catalog, or Course Descriptions: The course of study for the program must include classroom study and clinical instruction that incorporates the following:
      1. Introduction to pharmacy and health care systems:
        1. Confidentiality,

      2. Pharmacy law:
        1. Federal law;
        2. Florida State law;
        3. Florida State rules;
        4. Pharmacy technician Florida rules and law.

      1. The program shall provide evidence of academic preparation or experience in the subject matter by submitting a job description, resume or curriculum vitae which describes the faculty member’s work experience and level of academic preparation.
      2. When the subject matter of an offering includes pharmacy technician practice, a licensed pharmacist or registered pharmacy technician with expertise in the content area must be involved in the planning and instruction.
      3. Pharmacy technician faculty supervising learning experiences in a clinical area in this State shall be licensed or registered.
    3. Length of Program: The program must contain a minimum of one hundred sixty (160) hours of training, which shall not exceed six (6) months. Employer sponsored pharmacy technician training programs may request the program length exceed six (6) months in length under the following circumstances:
      1. For programs containing a minimum of one hundred eighty (180) hours, the program length shall not exceed nine (9) months;
      2. For programs containing a minimum of two hundred (200) hours, the program length shall not exceed twelve (12) months.
      3. In no event shall the total length of the training program exceed twelve (12) months.

For programs of any length, the Program Director may extend participation in the program for an individual employee. In no event shall an employee’s training be extended more than six (6) months beyond the program’s length.

  1. Evaluation: The program must give participants an opportunity to evaluate learning experiences, instructional methods, facilities and resources used for the offering.
  2. Test: The final test must include a minimum of one hundred (100) questions. The participant must achieve a minimum score of seventy percent (70%) on the evaluation to receive the certificate of completion. The evaluation must be graded by the provider. These tests are to ensure that self-directed learning experiences, including but not limited to home study, computer programs, internet or web-based courses evaluate participant knowledge at the completion of the learning experience.
  3. Program Director: The program must designate a Program Director to assume responsibility for the registered pharmacy technician training program. If the contact person is not a licensed pharmacist or registered pharmacy technician, provision shall be made for insuring licensed pharmacist or registered pharmacy technician input in overall program planning and evaluation.
  4. Policies/Procedures, Record-keeping, and Record Retention: The program must establish written policies and procedures for implementation of the registered pharmacy technician training program, maintain a system of record-keeping which provides for storage of program information, and maintain program records for a period not less than three (3) years during which time the records must be available for inspection by the board or department.
  5. Certificate of Completion: The program must furnish each participant with an authenticated individual Certificate of Completion.

The following entities offer Board of Pharmacy approved pharmacy technician training programs. If your program is already recognized by one of the following entities, please do not submit an application to the Board office.

The following steps apply to entities that would like to offer a Florida Board of Pharmacy approved pharmacy technician training program:

For Non-Employer-Based-Programs:

  1. Apply for Registered Pharmacy Technician Non-Employer-Based Training Program.Ensure that all fields are completed as instructed. An incomplete application shall expire after one (1) year. To apply, click here.
  2. Obtain evidence of licensure. A non-employer-based program must meet the requirements of and be licensed by the Commission for Independent Education pursuant to chapter 1005, F.S., or the equivalent licensing authority of another state or jurisdiction or is within the public-school system of the State of Florida. Please submit a copy of your licensure letter.
  3. Create a sample transcript and diploma. Please submit a copy of your sample transcript and diploma for your proposed training program to the Board office with your application.
  4. Develop a curriculum that meets the requirements set forth in Rule 64B16-26.351(3)(b), F.A.C. Please submit a copy of this curriculum, catalog, or other course descriptions to the Board office with your application.
  5. Assemble a faculty that meets the requirements set forth in Rule 64B16-26.351(3)(e), F.A.C. Please submit a copy of the faculty member’s job descriptions, resume, or curriculum vitae that describes the faculty member’s work experience and level of academic preparation. When the program subject matter includes pharmacy technician practice, a licensed pharmacist or registered pharmacy technician with expertise in the content area must be involved in the planning and instruction. Any pharmacy technician faculty supervising learning experiences in a clinical area in this State shall be licensed or registered.

For Employer-Based Programs:

  1. Apply for Registered Pharmacy Technician Employer-Based Training Program. Ensure that all fields are completed as instructed. An incomplete application shall expire after one (1) year. To apply, click here.
  2. Develop a curriculum that meets the requirements set forth in Rule 64B16-26.351(3)(b), F.A.C. Please submit a copy of this curriculum, catalog, or other course descriptions to the Board office with your application.
  3. Assemble a faculty that meets the requirements set forth in Rule 64B16-26.351(3)(e), F.A.C. Please submit a copy of the faculty members’ job descriptions, resume, or curriculum vitae that describes the faculty members’ work experience and level of academic preparation. When the program subject matter includes pharmacy technician practice, a licensed pharmacist or registered pharmacy technician with expertise in the content area must be involved in the planning and instruction. Any pharmacy technician faculty supervising learning experiences in a clinical area in this State shall be licensed or registered.
  4. Draft a sample evaluation. The program must give participants an opportunity to evaluate learning experiences, instructional methods, facilities and resources used for the offering. Please submit a copy of this evaluation to the Board office with your application.
  5. Create a certificate of completion. The program must furnish each participant with an authenticated individual Certificate of Completion. Please submit a copy of the certificate of completion to the Board office with your application.An ideal certificate of completion should include spaces for the following information:
    1. The applicant’s name;
    2. The Program Director’s name and signature;
    3. The RTTP license number; and
    4. The program name.

Please allow 30 days for initial review of new applications. All applications and document submissions are reviewed in the order they are received. After your application is reviewed, any deficiencies will be communicated to you in writing by our Board staff. To expedite processing, please submit all required supporting documentation with your application. If you are having documentation submitted by another entity on your behalf, please verify the Board office’s mailing address to ensure delivery.

Once your application has been deemed complete, you will receive correspondence form our office with your RTTP license number. Within 24 hours of conferral, you will be able to verify this information online.

There is no application fee for the Registered Pharmacy Technician Training Program application.
